About Showdown Tier
What is Showdown Tier?
Showdown Tier is a comprehensive Pokemon competitive statistics platform that analyzes real battle data from Pokemon Showdown. We provide daily-updated tier rankings, usage statistics, win rates, and detailed performance analysis across multiple competitive formats including VGC (Video Game Championships).
Our mission is to help competitive players make informed team-building decisions by providing accurate, data-driven insights into the current metagame.
Understanding the Statistics
Usage Rate
Represents how frequently a Pokemon appears in competitive battles, calculated as the percentage of teams that include this Pokemon. High usage rates typically indicate meta-defining Pokemon that shape team compositions.
Win Rate
The percentage of battles won when this Pokemon is on the team. A win rate above 50% indicates positive contribution to team performance. Note that popular Pokemon in mirror matches may show rates closer to 50%, while niche picks might display higher variance.
Starter Rate
The percentage of times this Pokemon is sent out as the lead. High starter rates suggest the Pokemon is valued for early-game impact or role compression.
Selection Rate
In bring-6-pick-4 formats like VGC, this shows how often a Pokemon is selected for battle from the full team of six. This metric helps distinguish between Pokemon brought for specific matchups versus consistent core members.
How Tiers Are Calculated
Our tier system (S/A/B/C/D/E) combines usage frequency and win rate through a sophisticated algorithm that accounts for statistical significance at different usage levels.
Key Principles:
- Lower usage Pokemon require higher win rates to achieve the same tier as popular picks
- Pokemon with 50%+ usage and 52%+ win rate can reach S-tier
- Pokemon with 20-30% usage need 55%+ win rate for S-tier
- Pokemon with under 10% usage require exceptional win rates (60%+) to reach S-tier, with most capping at A-tier
- This system prevents low-sample outliers from skewing rankings while rewarding consistently strong performers
Tiers are recalculated daily based on the latest battle data to reflect metagame shifts.
